What is Ayurveda?

Updated: Jun 8, 2020

Ayurveda (the science of life) is a Sanskrit work where Ayur means life and Veda means Science or knowledge. Ayurveda originated in India more than 3000 years ago.

In Ayurveda, it is believed that one's health and wellness depends on the balance between mind, body, and spirit. As we see in our day to day life, if our mind, body, and spirit are in balance or in check, we live a healthy lifestyle. If any or all the three are out of balance, we see an adverse effect on our health.

Our body, as per Ayurveda is made up of five elements: Air, Water, Fire, Space, and Universe. All of these five elements are combined to form three Energies (Dosha's) in Ayurveda which are Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth).

Every human-being has there own balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha and they together govern our body. Thus, an Ayurvedic regimen that works for one person will necessarily work for another person. Every human is born with their own constitution of the three Energies or Dosha's and an imbalance of any of these Dosha's leads to sickness or diseases. It is believed that our diet, habits, lifestyle, stress, emotional well being, incompatible food combinations, weather changes, leads to change in the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

A consultation with the Ayurveda practitioner is required if you need to understand whether or not all your three Energies or Doshas are in balance. A consultation usually is a series of questions and your answers will help the practitioner identify your energies and imbalances of any of the three energies. There are numerous companies available online offering these consultations but please read their reviews before you pick any company.
