Brahma Muhurta (period of knowledge)

Brahma Muhurta where Brahma means Knowledge and muhurta means period thus the period of knowledge. Brahma Muhurta (The creator hour) is one hour and thirty-six minutes before sunrise. In the Hindu calendar, muhurta is a measurement of time with each muhurta lasting 48 minutes, There are 30 Muhurta in a day. Brahma muhurta is a second last muhurta before sunrise.

Now, you may ask why is Brahma Muhurta important in Ayurveda.

In Ayurveda, Brahma muhurta is considered the best part of the day. As per Ayurveda, those who awaken in Brahma Muhurta receive abundant mental, physical and spiritual health.

Vata is one of the three Dosha's or energies in Ayurveda. Vata dosha represents movement and communication, Pitta represents transformation and sharpness, and Kapha represents dullness.

Brahma Muhurta occurs during the Vata phase of the morning between 2:00 am-6:00 am. Vata phase governs basic body functions, heart function, mind, breathing, and ability to get rid of waste through intestines.

As I learned earlier in life from my mother and grandmother that a healthy person should wake up in Brahma Muhurta to maximize the transfer of knowledge, creativity of mind, and for the clarity of thoughts. During exam times, I used to wake up between 4:30 am and 5:00 am as that's when I was able to learn and memorize the most. I have developed a habit of waking up before sunrise every day and I am in bed around 9:30 pm to get my eight hours of sleep. After a good night's sleep, we can achieve deeper states of meditation as our mind will be like a blank sheet of paper low on emotions and day to day worries.

Brahma Muhurta is the right time to recharge one's body, mind, and soul and to achieve higher goals.
